Why Go Green ?

photoYou have probably noticed that 'going green' is everywhere these days - in the news, politics, fashion, on the internet, on foods we buy, pet care, it is taught at schools, on TV and it is even defining technology now. Even going shopping today we are asked to pay for plastic bags and to switch to using reusable bags to help the environment.

With a million messages and ideas coming at us from all sides, it can be easy to get confused about what to do. We need to really stop and think about the big picture of how our actions stack up and impact on our planet.

It is so simple to begin making a positive impact. Since it's helpful to understand the big picture when it comes to setting smaller goals, we've adjusted our focus to take a broader look at the reasons behind why we should go green.

As globalisation makes the world become smaller, it is becoming increasingly easy to see how the lives of people (and plants, animals and ecosystems) everywhere are closely interrelated with one another. So buying toys made in China, can impact on the quality of life in Europe, pesticides used in Argentina can affect the health of people in the U.S., the planting of biofuels in Brazil deplete rainforests and may affect weather in Australia, and greenhouse gas emissions and the burning of rainforests in Indonesia adversely impacts on people in Malaysia, and Singapore.

It is true that every single thing we do has an impact on the planet for good or bad. The good news is that as an individual you have the power to control most of your choices and, therefore, the impact that you create: from where you live to what you buy, eat, and use to power your home, where and how you vacation and how you shop or vote, you can have global impact.

Taking positive action is heavily encouraged also. That is why Carbon Central Network was created, it is envisioned that through rewarding people and combining the efforts of individuals all around the world we can really create an impact on reducing the effect of global warming through getting people and companies to start paying to offset their carbon outputs, and to put pressure on governments to decrease the logging of rainforests.

For example, did you know that 25 per cent of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from flora that come from the Amazon rainforest? And that less than 1 per cent of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists? These numbers suggest that we all have a large (and growing) personal stake in the health and vitality of places far and near. We could in fact be destroying cures for many diseases by cutting down the worlds rainforests. In addition to protecting biodiversity, the worlds rainforests are 'natural carbon sinks' taking greenhouse gases out of our atmosphere.

Bottom line: It benefits everyone on the planet to help keep our wild spaces alive and growing.

Embracing a greener lifestyle can also mean saving money on your energy use, improving your health, padding your bank account, and ultimately, improving your overall quality of life and at the same time, you can preserve furry animals from becoming extinct also. Why wouldn't anyone want to go green?
